Title: Ocean Waves /
I Can Hear the Sea
[海がきこえる]
Year: 1993
Genre: Romance; Drama
Language: Japanese
Studio: Studio Ghibli
Episode: 1

Story:

The story starts out with our main character, Morisaki Taku, taking a plane back to his home town, Kochi. As he sits on the plane, he starts to think about his high school years, where he met a new transfer girl, Muto Rikako. From the beginning, his best friend, Matsuno Yutaka, tried to get this girl. At the same time, Taku also began to have some feeling for her. However, Muto is a Tokyo girl with attitude, so most people stayed away from her. How, would this story play out? This is a story of not just about romance but stories about young lives.

Review:

Another good story from Ghibli again. Although it is nothing exciting or extreme, it still pulls you in. It's a story of how they learn to see the world. In the beginning, you will see Rikako displaying a very superficial attitude. As the story progress, she shows more of her mature side, but her action and attitude toward others remain as always. This can be identify in real life, where a person knows better but does not change his/her path.

Desprite being drama like anime, there is no plot in this anime. In many parts of this movie, the view have to think as to what happen in this story. There are many unshown truth and feeling. If you understand the Japanese culture or Asian culture, you probably will understand it better. Just to tell you right off, Rikako is not as superficial as you might think, desprite her actions. In some part, you probably would not understand it until you think about it after the end.

Like many other Ghibli movies, the story is told not through just the dialog, but the characters' actions and movements. This is where Ghibli separates itself from most anime and cartoon. Their expressions are priceless, because there are no words to fully explain it. In some way, I think the drawing is separating itself from the script.

In overall, the people who will enjoy this anime is those that can watch a story for its lifeness, and not for one thing specificially. There is no action to fulfill anyone nor comedy to make any laugh out loud. It is a story that gives you a smirk and appreciate life a little more.

Score: 8/10

Good story, even without any plot. The drawing seems a bit lacking; however, the music is great. Many tunes play at the right time to the right scene. Great for those who enjoy drama.
